THE WEEKND FEAT. KENDRICK LAMAR AND DANIEL WILSON – SIDEWALKS (PRODUCED BY DOC MCKINNEY,ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD AND DANIEL WILSON)
Torontonian r&b crooner and founder of XO label, The Weeknd continues to ride the wave of success dropping his third studio album entitled Starboy packed with productions by Ben Billions,Jake One,Metro Boomin,Frank Dukes,Diplo.
Well,in all feirness,we have to admit we loved the artist behind the sublime trilogy House Of Ballons,Thursday and Echoes of Silence which provided obscure, seductive sounds and tons n tons of emotions but… unfortunately the big record deals have the capacity to change something original into anything else (yap, it sounds ear-catchy but it’s not genuine ,not thrilling).
We like to be objective and honest , this is our policy, but we cannot, however, conclude our consideration without giving credit where credit is due!
Yezzir,Mr.Tesfaye grabs our attention with a phenomenal piece included on Starboy, entitled Sidewalks featuring grammy award winning rapper Kendrick Lamar. During an interview with Zane Lowe,Abel described the production process and the collaboration with K.Dot
He’d play the record over and over again. I played him songs, the Starboy theme of course, which he incorporated into his verse. He would just walk around. We had food. He’s writing his verse in his head. He would go into his phone, look at it a few and then put it back and start walking around. He then at one point he went into the studio booth and I closed the door and I could hear him yelling his verse in his head. He was really committed, you can tell he put his all into. It wasn’t just a random Kendrick Lamar verse, it was something special because again, I don’t like to say this all the time, but we’ve known each other for a while and it’s crazy how we started connecting on this record.
The great r&b jam is finely wrapped by three masterminds: Doc McKinney, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Daniel Wilson (who also provided the post-hook delighting our senses with his laidback vocals).
Martin McKinney aka Doc McKinney is a canadian-born producer who had the pleasure to work with different artists such as Esthero,Debi Nova,John Legend,Drake,Young Buck,M.I.A and Santigold and he was the architect behind many hot tracks fromThe Weeknd’s mixtapes.
Fresh from the final album of A Tribe Called Quest entitled We Got It From Here,Thank You 4 Your Service , hip-hop titan Ali Shaheed Muhammad got a curriculum that really speaks for itself and surely that is enough to consider him as an icon , a living legend.
Daniel Wilson is a triple-threat from Michigan: songwriter, singer as well as talented producer equipped with an exciting falsetto and an experimental approach that is clearly reflected in his solo album entitled Sinner Of The Week dropped in August
