The Remix Session series keep a focus on prodcuers/djs/beatmakers’s skills to deconstruct a track to create something new and original and with the new volume we bet you will appreciate and support the talent of the artists we selected !
Enjoy yourself people!
The question is: is it possible to create a better beat for past masterpieces? Yap,the answer is yes! Maybe you’re turning your nose up but allow us to show you something really really cool that will support our conviction. Do you remember the biographical film directed by Norman Jewison entitled The Hurricane? Damn,it was an epic movie with an epic soundtrack packed with big-names such as Black Star,Kelly Price,Meshell Ndegeocello,Gil-Scott Heron,Etta James,Ray Charles to name a few.Well, french veteran beatmaker Kayo put his hands on the hip-hop cut called Hurricane performed by The Roots alongside Mos Def,Common,Jazzytafnastees,Dice Raw and femcee Flo Brown to create something new! In our humble opinion the treatment remix overshadows the original version and it reflects the signature jazzy boom-bap of Kayo works. The Strasbourg beat-wizard got a style with a strong penchant for jazz (influenced by icons such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans),soul (he draws inspiration from Isaac Hayes and Minnie Ripperton) and hip-hop (his sound flirts with the 90’s hip-hop a la Pete Rock,A Tribe Called Quest). If you love what you’re hearing don’t hesitate to check out Kayo’s Inner City Bootleg Vol.2
Maybe many of you are not familiar with Swedish duo Hygher Baby. Composed by producer Daniel Sandell aka Pure P and vocalist Nils Tull known as Melo they intrigued us with the amazing r&b project called Let Me Play U Something U Have Never Heard . Munich based indipendent label Tokyo Dawn Records dropped in 2010 the excellent compilation The Heart selecting a lot of gems performed by Georgia Anne Muldrow,Jimetta Rose,Coco of Quadron,Miles Bonny and many others. The compilation includes also a superb remix version of Let U Go performed by Hygher Baby and masterfully remixed by DJ Asparagus. Haris Badić aka DJ Asparagus adds a dose of Motown to the joint sampling Intimate Friends by soul singer Edward James Kendrick. Yes, the remix got an appealing vibe.
KingUnderground co-founder DJ/producer,turntablist Dan Englander aka DJ Pings resumes a dope piece by hip-hop mogul Pete Rock called Revenge featuring Grap Luva and imprints his own style with an hard-hitting remix. Dope! The revisition is a balanced blend of jazz and soulful hip-hop that sounds pretty cool. We would emphasise the great work of KingUnderground label for the promotion of bright artistists such as Lewis Parker,Fredfades,Ivan Ave,Simiah and Brianna Colette. Check out the label Bandcamp page
SADE – CHERISH THE DAY (PAL JOEY REMIX)
The british soul-jazz sound of Sade charmed several generations. Albums like Diamond Life,Stronger Then Pride and Love Deluxe are real milestones that continue to shine bright.Long Island producer Joseph Longo aka Pal Joey offers us his revisitation of Sade’s Cherish The Day,a clever and refined mixing of hip-hop beats, jazz and soul. As veteran producer Pal Joey cooked tracks for Boogie Down Productions,Shabba Ranks and M.C.Lyte.
From the mid-90s to early 2000s r&b music scene lived a flourishing moment and one of the key figure alongside Bryan Michael Cox,Jermaine Dupri,Eric Hudson,Dre & Vidal,Tim & Bob is undoubtedly the hitmaker Rodney Jerkins better known by the stage name Darkchild. The four time grammy award winner graced our ears with classic pieces like: The Boy Is Mine,Say My Name,Déjà Vu and the list goes on and on. Darkchild is also a gifted remixer, creating compelling reworks of a lot of songs by Brownstone,Aaliyah,Tyrese,Kirk Franklin and Mary J Blige. We selected the remix version of Something About You performed by r&b/new jack swing group New Edition featuring hip-hop rapper AZ. Can you feel the good nostalgic vibe? The original version appeared on our 11th installment of Stay Mellow series.
To introduce the next incredible remix we have to take a trip to 1996 and sweep the dust off of A Tribe Called Quest fourth album entitled Beats,Rhymes & Life. The iconic opus includes a lot of collaborations with New York based hip-hop rapper Consequence, who decided to drop the mixtape A Tribe Called Quence in 2005 under the label Draft Records. The mixtape is a collection of Cons collabo with ATCQ some of which are revisited and remixed by hip-hop luminaries such as 9th Wonder and 88-Keys. We chose the superlative, extra soulful treatment remix of Mind Power off Beats,Rhymes & Life handled by The Odd Couple.
Sometimes when you try to remix legendary songs that trascend the ordinary and don’t suffer from the effect of time , you understand that it can be a difficult task! Toronto DJ/producer Alister “Catalist” Johnson resumed in 2004 a 1965 classic by soul diva Nina Simone Feeling Good to create a bold remix. Hats off to Mr. Alister who tailors a special re-arrangement that perfectly match with Nina Simone vocals flaunting rare craftmanship and panache assisted by the flute of Arthur Kerekes.
Erykah Badu is probably one of the most inspiring artist of the black music scene. Until now we spotlighted a lot of producers/beatmakers who paid their tribute to the queen of neo-soul with stunning remixes and we have to say the list is huge: Pazmal & Corey Chase , FloFilz & Pawcut , Drome , DJ Day , Columbia Nights and also Freddie Joachim,Opolopo,Sam Champ,Suff Daddy,Kaytranada. Today we serve you up a supa tasteful dish cooked by Da Boom Squad! Yessir, U.K songwriter, producer and remixer Matt Ward aka Da Boom Squad appeared on da b-side of Badu’s On & On 12” with a superlative remix! Da Boom Squad creates a sparkling urban backdrop that doesn’t affect the original essence of the joint.
Recently we wrote a review of an interesting remix of D’Angelo gem Brown Sugar by canadian beatmaker Snare Jordan. Brown Sugar is another inspiring piece that stimulated the creativity of so many producers, just like On & On by Ms.Badu. Spanish producer/singer Quiroga grabbed our attention with a cool style that mix elements of soul with boom-bap hip-hop rhythm! It’s time to get familiar with the talented Barcelona based sonic-scientist, tasting his sublime remix version of D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar.
Ireland beatmaker Liam Carroll flexes his ability as remixer resuming the hip-hop EP entitled Lifted by losangeleno emcee Blu. Oh Gosh, Mr.Carroll reinvents a new version of the masterpiece called Soul Provider produced by Blu’s partner in crime Exile Manfredi and he definitely blows our mind! The irish dude digs in the crate taking inspiration from a 1975 record by funk group War and uses the sample of Lotus Blossom to create a special rework of Soul Provider that sounds so fucking dope!
