SCRATCHTHEBLOCK PRESENTS: RE-AWAKENING (A NEO-SOUL TRIP)
We’re avid listeners and lovers of neo-soul music, we got so many great records that literally changed our way to approach to music, experimenting a kind of empathetic resonance. Records like Voodoo,The Revelation Is Now Televised,Who Is Jill Scott,Instant Vintage,Acoustic Soul,Aijuswanaseing,Urban Hang Suite and Rize are only few projects that we consider as classic of nu-soul music.
Today we continue our exciting soul-trip inviting y’all to get familiar with some delightful pieces performed by talented artists that deserve your attention.
Ladies & gentleman this is Re-Awakening ….a neo-soul trip.
We follow London singer/songwriter Zilo for a long time, maybe since she dropped Cure & The Cause sampling the mighty Jay Dee. We love her attitude to paint vivid emotions through her vocal skills, so today we resumed another impressive groovy piece called Lunar released two years ago and finely produced by another british gifted artist, rapper/producer Jay Prince
Four years ago Massachusetts hip-hop producer Teddy Rosenthal aka Teddy Roxpin launched an interesting side project called Sweat Box. For those who are into hip-hop, maybe the name of Mr.Roxpin sounds familiar, infact he put his remarkable touch on dope tracks performed by big names such as Mac Miller,Michael Christmas,Dillon Cooper and Phil Ade just to name a few. In 2013 Teddy recruited some talented musicians to work on a project called Surrounded by Vinyl under the moniker Sweat Box and we have to say Teddy & co. created a well-appointed album that reminds us other young groups such as Chi-Town ensamble Kids These Days or Brooklyn crew Phony PPL. With Ricky Bakken on bass, Daniel Halligan on sax and vocals and the delectable voice of Danille Ummel , Sweat Box will delight your senses with da supa-smooth and fresh piece called That Ride (make sure y’all to peep out the official video)
Vibrant, intoxicating, refreshing and equipped with a bright well-rounded talent , Amber Navran and her group Moonchild have the merit of bringing back neo-soul music , through quality and extra-refined albums like Be Free, Please Rewind and the last effort Voyager . The Los Angeles red-haired songbird , recently unleashed her solo project entitled Speak Up , confirming her incredible skills as producer as well as singer. Allow us to serve you up the spoken-word mellow piece called Letter7/Say Yes with a fine re-arrangement of Floetry’s Say Yes.
Tre Samuels.….could this guy be anymore perfect?
The Melbourne model and singer caught our attention two years ago with the single Midnight Medusa and last year with the project Lost In Translation. This year , Tre Samuels decided to level up,recording a brand new work called Raspberry Wine entirely produced by one of the most interesting producers from Australia: Silent Jay.
Seductive and soulful , Rasberry Wine includes the supa-catchy song titled Roll Thru.
Texas native and New York based production duo Grumby knocked we out with a sound that comes to life from a sonic-palette that encompasses jazz, soul,r&b and electronica. Consisting of Raj Singh aka Rajuju and Andrew Why aka Butterfly , Grumby is a balanced and clever amalgamation of different backgrounds as you can realize listening to their debut project called Changes. We selected the superlative and powerful mellow track called You featuring the powerhouse vocals of Orlando native and N.Y based singer/songwriter Hollywood Anderson
The music biz is unpredictable,is cruel,is picky and follow the trends of the moment….so, many great albums fall victim to marketing rules and disappear! In 1995 Los Angeles artists Talib Lacheppelle, Rahim, Cedric ‘Ced’ Stephens, Robert ‘Berto’ Cooks and Tredione ‘Tre’ Washington got a record deal with Warner Bros that led them to release the superlative album Stepchild under the stage name Stepchild. It’s not easy to pigeonhole the project because the sound flirts with different genres such as funk,r&b,swing and hip-hop but honestly it’s not important! In our humble opinion , Stepchild was a groundbreaking group able to record an album that deserves a comfortable spot in your music collection. Scrtblk crew highly recommends to listen closely the cut called Live 4 Today. D-A-M-N this is real soul-food!!
Young and talented singer/songwriter Kemi Ade comes straight from South London to bring to us a delightful stream of alternative neo-soul music. Six months ago the girl with the curly hair , dropped the project called Ownesty impressing us with da sublime nu-soul jam entitled Rare One.
Australia alternative performer Allysha Joy is an artist with a bright future. Equipped with an incredible timbre , this beautiful and gifted singer impressed us with the outstanding works with her experimental collective 30/70 which recently released the fan-tas-tic Elevate . A well-structured and organic project, where experimentation is the common thread. The perfect and wise connection of different genres such as funk, soul, jazz, urban beats and neo-soul gives us an high-quality album. We share with y’all the sumptuous Takin Me Back
One year ago , we spotlighted the interesting project by London producer Talos called LowLight ,that included a dope collabo with a soulful singer known as Jerome Thomas. In the same year ,the east London singer/songwriter released the flawless opus entitled Conversations, recruiting producers Talos,El Train and Hurricane.Conversations is definitely a superb and succesful attempt to bring back da neo-soul vibe with soulful urban rhythm , jazzy textures and groovy tones.Jerome describes his sound:
”I just want to bring the old days back, when you would go out and buy the music and you’d be excited for it.I’m only interested in making things that are timeles”
We selected the smooth Soulquarians-esque neo-soul piece called Spotless Mind finely wrapped by Talos.
