In 2013 Illa J and Frank Nitt aka Yancey Boys dropped their album titled Sunset Blvd entirely produced by the beloved J.Dilla, under Delicious Vinyl . The great opus includes some interesting collaborations with artists like: Common, Talib Kweli,Eric Roberson,SlimKid3 (of The Pharcyde) and the list goes on. We chose the supa-catchy gem titled Beautiful with Pos of legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul and singer Botni Applebum (she appeared on Budamunk and Joe Style masterpiece Soul Quest)
WALKIN’ LARGE – REACHIN (FOR MY PEOPLE) (PRODUCED BY ROE BEARDIE)
Constantin Arey and Onosizo Sibongiseni Ngcala hit the hip-hop scene in 1995 recording a masterpiece titled Riverside Picture under the moniker of Walkin’ Large. The german duo counted on da support of german hip-hop producer Roe Beardie to cook the sumptuous distilled jazzy joint titled Reachin’ (For My People). Mr. Beardie used the sample of Jimmy McGriff’s track titled Back On The Track. Simply amazing!!
THE WIXTONS – UP JUMP THE BOOGIE (PRODUCED BY ERICK SERMON AND TY FYFFE)
On da hip-hop selection titled Fat Beats we blew the dust of Erick Sermon‘s compilation called Insomnia . We continue to celebrate the talent of E.Sermon digging in his ultra-magnetic production and highlighting the dope Up Jump The Boogie included on Insomnia compilation , performed by Def Squad affiliated The Wixtons and produced by Erick Sermon and Tyrone “Ty” Fyffe
STRANGE FRUIT PROJECT – GOOD VIBES (PRODUCED BY SYMBOLYC ONE)
Texas hip-hop group Strange Fruit Project knows exactly how to engage your senses with their soulful approach to hip-hop beats. Myth and Myone on da mic and S1 aka Symbolyc One as mastermind producer bewitched us with their most impressive project titled From Divine. If you are looking for something to lose your senses don’t hesitate to taste the mellow joint Good Vibes.
MADVILLAIN FEAT. STACY EPPS – EYE (PRODUCED BY MADLIB)
Back in 2004 to focus our attention on hip-hop avant-garde milestone: Madvillainy. The epic album was released under legendary Stones Throw label and it’s the brainchild of two exponents of hip-hop music , MF Doom and Madlib who recorded a groundbreaking album under the moniker of Madvillain. The amazing hooks,live riffs and loops are the solid architecture of a must have opus that identifies a musical niche. We recommend the flawless Eye performed by the sophisticated voice of the one and only Stacy Epps (she appeared on several selections here on da block: Digging In The Crates Vol.3,Da Groove,Stay Mellow)
SMIF-N-WESSUN – KIM (KEEP IT MOVING) (PRODUCED BY DJ EVIL DEE)
Dah Shining by Smif-N-Wessun is surely a must have for real hip hop heads! The Brooklyn based duo Tek & Steele known as Smif-N-Wessun rocked the ghetto streets with underground bangers like Bucktown,Sound Bwoy Bureill. It’s betta if you pump the volume to appreciate the jazz-hop flow of KIM (Keep It Moving) produced by beat constructor DJ Evil Dee (member of Black Moon).
SLUM VILLAGE – ESTIMATE (PRODUCED BY J.DILLA)
In 1996 Jay Dee dug in the crates to discover something really cool for his production! And wow….. Dilla gave to the hip-hop world a top-tier instrumental taking advantage of a 1970 record by keyboardist, composer, arranger Clare Fisher. We are talking about the tune titled Estimate included on hip-hop classic album Fantastic Vol.1 by legendary group Slum Village.
SHOWBIZ AND AG – NEXT LEVEL (PRODUCED BY DJ PREMIER)
Former member of D.I.T.C , producer Showbiz and emcee AG joined their forces to release in 1995 Good Fellas , a project that includes some important collaborations: DJ Roc Raida,Method Man,Diamond D,Lord Finesse. We selected the outstanding track titled Next Level produced by hip-hop guru DJ Premier.
SHAM THE PROFESSOR – WHO’S AT THE DOOR (PRODUCED BY ADAM GAZZOLA AND SAM SEVER)
In the early 90s , Coney Island hip-hop group Sham The Professor consisting of Sean Skolnick & Keith Gill released Split Personalities from which we decided to select the supa-hot Who’s At The Door! Raw rhymes and tight beats produced by Adam Gazzola and Sam Sever will blow your mind.
