Let’s go beautiful people…
If you are a scratchtheblock.com aficionado then you already know Tom Bailey! Last year in September we introduced to you Bailey music spotlighting two pieces: Renaissance and the compelling rendition of Marvin Gaye’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough . The France native and London based singer/songwriter/musician doesn’t sound like your run-of-the-mill contemporary mainstream r&b performers …Tom sonorities meanders between neo-soul and intimate r&b harmonies unveiling a deep influence from D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Prince. Sit back, relax and prepare yourself for a nice & slow,extra-soulful trip titled Voodoo Woman 2.0
Floetic and Flo’Ology are two incredibile masterpieces by Floetry , with which they earned love and respect (specially from the neo-soul heads!!) at international level. The duo , composed by Marsha “The Songstress” Ambrosius and Natalie ” The Floacist” Stewart disbanded in 2007 to pursue solo careers. Maybe not many of you know that Natalie worked with a plethora of renowned jazz musicians, soul and hip-hop artists as: Macy Gray,Earth, Wind & Fire,Blackalicious,Bilal,Jeff Bradshaw,Boney James,Angie Stone,Mike Phillips,Brian Culbertson,Jackie Joyner and Tweet to name a few. As solo artist The Floacist got three records under her belt : Floetic Soul,Floetry Re:Birth and Rise Of The Phoenix Mermaid . We chose a great piece from her debut solo album Floetic Soul released in 2010. The project includes a bevy of big names such Musiq Soulchild,Lalah Hathaway,Jeff Bradshaw and Raheem DeVaughn. Inspirational, relaxing, deep and intense , Floetic Soul is definitely an uplifting sonic experience and the track titled Let Me is the clear proof of what we’re talking about! Last year in December The Floacist dropped the mixtape called The Evolution Of Flo , a collection of her successes.
Sometimes we love to be a lil bit daring when we work on a new selection…so we decided to select a sumptuous piece by Spacek. The British avant-garde experimental trio composed by Edmund Cavill, Morgan Zarate and the genius Steve Spacek provided music for not ordinary people and the project titled Vintage Hi-Tech summarizes their signature sound! In order to appreciate their music you have to close your eyes, clear your head, take a deep breath and plunge your ears into the intricate sound where electronic,futuristic-soul,funk and downtempo live together in harmony. Taste the hypnotic La Bougie produced by Steve Spacek brother D-Bridge (a trained drum’n’bass architect ) featuring the laid back vocals of the South Africa-born, London-raised singer-songwriter Mpho Skeef (who worked alongside Bugz In The Attic,Us3,Amp Fiddler,King Britt,Herbaliser)
To remember the name of Renee Neufville just like a member of Zhané is absolutely a failure to respect her huge artistry! In fact she was not only the partner in crime with Jean Baylor ,giving to the world hit like Hey Mr. DJ , Groove Thang and Sending My Love but she collaborated with a huge list of artists that includes: DJ Center,Dego of 4Hero, RH Factor,Leela James,Kardinal Offishall,Wyclef Jean,Heather Headley,Busta Rhymes,Will Downing,DJ Jazzy Jeff,Heather B,Seravince,Aaliyah,Pete Rock. Musician, producer, songwriter and bright vocalist , the Brooklyn native artist recently leapt back with a brand new single titled Watching Me….and damn….she brought back the 90s feel-good vibe with a self-produced flawless jam. To be fair, the recent single is an updated version of the track released five years ago through her Soundcloud page with the intro by canadian hip-hop rapper Kardinal Offishall.
Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical better known as the production duo Potatohead People represent the best of what canadian hip-hop scene has to offer! But wait…..their production spans a wide range of styles encompassing soul, electronic, funk and jazz. We resumed one of their most impressive work titled Kosmichemusik released four years ago via Vancouver based label Jelly Fish . The project exudes their signature soulful,dilla-esque sound enhanced with interesting collabo with Moka Only,Frank Nitt. Taste the relaxing vibe of Blossoms featuring Vancouver singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Claire Mortifee , an interesting canadian voice which draws inspiration from Amy Winehouse,Erykah Badu and Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon.
In April we introduced to you the talent of Ngan selecting a ear-catchy piece titled Shadows. Today we invite y’all to focus your attention on the music performed by the New York singer, songwriter with another interesting piece. The song is called Mama I Got This Gun and it was recorded alongside Melbourne based producer,multi-instrumentalist (guitar, keyboard) Mitchell Graunke , also member of the alternative/indie band Morocco Fields. Appealing groove, laid back rhythm for a neo-soul simple song that will captivate your soul!
Chonita Gilbert known by the moniker N’Dambi, is a Dallas-bred songstress, musician and songwriter. She kicked off her career as backing-singer for her fellow citizen diva Erykah Badu. She worked with some jazz acts like Jeff Bradshaw,Nicholas Payton,Snarky Puppy as well as neo-soul artists like Geno Young and made her debut with the monumental album Little Lost Girls Blues released in 1999. The album epitomizes the signature neo-soul sound, where jazz and soulful r&b merge together to create a tuneful groove. Little Lost Girls Blues is definitely one of the most impressive and must-have nu-soul album and we want to celebrate the immense talent of N’Dambi resuming a sumptuous piece called See Ya In My Dreams. The song is produced by neo-soul pioneer Maduku Chinwah , the man behind milestones by Ms. Badu. This year N’Dambi collaborated with Houston rapper Lecrae on his mixtape Church Clothes 3 recording the powerful song Freedom.
We dag in the creates to blow the dust off an epic neo-soul record titled II by Laurnea Wilkerson. The album was released 16 years ago via a small indipendent label known as Ying Yang Music Café but we can assure you that it’s a quality album. The album boasts appearances from Jon B,Anthony David,D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony!Toni!Toné! and Speech of Arrested Development. Prepare yourself for a special trip, put on your headphones and listen to Keep Your Head Up masterfully produced by A Tribe Called Quest soldier Ali Shaheed Muhammad Jones.
Time to give space to some interesting rookies! Courtney Bennett is a young and cool artist able to combine nice skills as rapper and great vocals qualities. The West London native is carving out her own lane with serious musical material and today we wanna give you the opportunity to experience her artistry listening to something special. The track is called What’s The Deal and it really impressed us thanks also the simply amazing backdrop crafted by prominent producer/beatmaker IAMNOBODI . The Soulection affiliate dropped recently the compelling EP titled Imani . In 2013 Courtney Bennett was recruited by veteran r&b/hip-hop mogul Ryan Leslie to record a song alongside super-producer Illmind for R-Les fourth album Black Mozart.
Recently we stumbled upon Bri Blvck music and it was like a breath of fresh air! Yezzir, the Charlotte-bred self-proclaimed “trill violinist, rapper and soul singer” blew our mind with a particular track called Everything. The song is included on the EP Indigo Night and it’s a spectacular proof of her immeasurable talent. She takes advantage of the ultra-smooth beats cooked by the skilful British beat-wizard Nk-Ok (member of the hip-hop collective Age Of L.U.N.A.) who used the sample of Come Unto Me by Take 6. Make sure you to peep the official video of Everything
