BEHIND THE PROJECT: TIGALLERRO BY PHONTE AND ERIC ROBERSON
As great great fans of the experimental group The Foreign Exchange and indipendent neo-soul singer Eric Roberson, we welcomed the brand new work by Phonte Coleman and Mr. Roberson titled TigallErro with open arms .
The sonic orientation moved largely in the direction of our expectations thanks the solid line-up of producers involved on the project.
As we have done for the Anderson.Paak magnum opus Malibu , today we sift through the excellent productions that made TigallErro a genuine sonic journey!
Behind the project is our attempt to pay tribute to the producers and musicians whose craft is often overshadowed and underexposed.
The New Jersey-bred Eric Jones aka E.Jones is the producer who handled the first track titled It’s So Easy.
Mr.Jones is a Jamla Records in-house producer and member of conglomerate of hitmakers, The Soul Council founded by hip-hop mogul 9th Wonder who recruited also Khrysis, Eric.G and Hi-Tek among others.
E.Jones background draws inspiration from Organized Noise, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, The Neptunes, Swizz Beats and Just Blaze but his flawless attitude to range from hip-hop rhythms to downtempo soul sonorities led him the opportunity to work with different artists such as neo-soul singer Darien Brockington as well as hip-hop lyricists like Talib Kweli,Dave East,Bad Lucc and Rapsody.
In this case E.Jones worked alongisde Zo! and Phonte to record a smooth piece with the background vocals of Shana Tucker in order to set the mood of the audience!
His motto is: “Pray,Focus,Plan,Execute” and his boundless potential as musician and producer lead him to win a grammy award in 2012 (as producer involved on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) and in 2015 after working on Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 released in 2013!
We’re talking about Texas super-producer Symbolyc One aka S1.
We stumbled upon this important figure of the hip-hop scene in 2002 when he recruited his cousin Myth and Myrone embarking on a project called From Divine under the moniker Strange Fruit Project.
The hip-hop group blew our mind with soulful hip-hop beats and mellow rhymes giving us dope works like Soul Travelin’ and The Healing.
Tigallo and Erro enlist S1 to record the sumptuous piece titled Thru The Night .
He hears frequencies,he got a purist approach to the production,he got game as musician and he comes straight from Virginia.
Devonne Harris aka DJ Harrison is the creative mind behind My Kind Of Lady and Hold Tight , two interesting pieces that reflect Harrison style , a tuneful mélange of nu-soul,r&b,hip-hop,blues and jazz!
With a musical background which covers the great geniuses of music like Herbie Hancock,Earth Wind and Fire and Miles Davis, DJ Harrison made an important contribution to TigallErro with his mastery and finesse.
DJ Harrison is also a member of the experimental band Butcher Brown (check out their last effort Virginia Noir released in July) alongside drummer Corey Fonville, guitarist Keith Askey and bassist Andrew Randazzo.
Former member of hip-hop collective The Amphibians and currently 1/2 of the Washington hip-hop outfit 1978ers alongside rapper yU , Zachariah McGant better known by the moniker Slimkat78 is a producer and instrumentalist from the Washington DC area!
Slimkat78 is responsible for the co-production of Grow This Love , working side by side with Nicolay on keyboard,Aaron Hardin and Mr.Turner!
During his career Slim worked with big names such as Raheem DeVaughn,Lil John Roberts,Eric Roberson,Nicholas Ryan Gant,Diamond District (Oddisee,XO,yU) to name a few.
Musical director, producer, musician and songwriter Aaron Hardin earned a lot of respect amongst the international music scene thanks his versatility and proficiency.
Mr.Hardin collaborated with a long list of artists from the jazz scene like Robert Glasper,Snarky Puppy,Chantae Cann to the soul/r&b scene like Goapele, Kenny Lattimore, Lalah Hathaway, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Rahsaan Patterson, Bilal and hip-hop scene such as Slum Village, Pusha T, Tyler the Creator and Talib Kweli.
Aaron Hardin co-produced the song titled Grow This Love and played the organ.
Washington DC Dennis Turner aka Mr. Turner is a gifted producer and musical director but also a prominent bassist who played with soul,jazz,hip-hop seminal acts like Yazarah, Jessie Boykins III,Sy Smith and recently Oddisee (working on his last instrumental The Odd Tape) and singer Oliver St.Louis.
Mr. Turner made a mark on TigallErro playing and co-producing the tune titled Grow This Love helping his partner-in-crime Nicolay,Slimkat78 and Aaron Hardin to create a blissful sonic experience.
In 2002 Dennis Turner embarked on a project with a band known as YamamaNym,providing an appealing blend of neo-soul,rhythm & blues and a sort of vintage soul (taste the album Soularevolution).
FE+ associated Lorenzo Ferguson aka Zo! recently delighted our palates with his last opus titled Sky Break , a superb and soulful album that houses great performers such as Carmen Rodgers, U.K singer/musician Dornik,Muhsinah and Mr. Eric Roberson.
Zo! returns the favor giving a strong and precious contribute behind the board co-producing It’s So Easy and producing the track titled Never The Same Smile but that’s not all…infact Zo had an important role as musician playing on My Kind Of Lady,Hold Tight and Waiting 4 Ya!
As you know Zo! represents one of our favorite producers, he’s always able to tug our heartstrings with his signature melodic and soul stirring sound.
Yap,yap, yap….Pasadena producer Stro Elliot has our full respect for many reasons… he’s a real mastermind behind the boards and he’s also the genius who spawned a supa-cool musical project under the moniker The Procussions joining his skills with Mr. J Medeiros.
Stro is currently working on his self-titled debut LP under the umbrella of House Shoes label Street Corner Music , in da meantime he dropped two hip-hop leaks .
Stro Elliot put his remarkable mark on da song titled Waiting 4 Ya.
Breakbeat music represents his foundation as DJ and his acumen and immeasurable knowleadge of music made him a kind of prototype of what should be a real DJ!
We’re talking about guru sound selector from Philly, Rich Medina.
Medina live sets around the globe span a wide range of genres from soul to hip-hop,from disco to house and he has undoubtedly contributed to spread and bring to attention Fela Kuti’s afrobeat.
Alongside other excellent artists like King Britt,DJ Jazzy Jeff,DJ Spinna,Vikter Duplaix,Jneiro Jarel we can assert Mr. Medina is def one of the most skilful DJ at international level!
Rich Medina co-produced the song titled Waiting 4 Ya with the impressive vocals of Carmen Rodgers.
Paris Nicole Strother co-produced with Rich Medina and Stro Elliot Waiting 4 Ya.
The 1/3 of KING is a bright and multi-talented artist: she sings, she’s an artful songwriter, she plays piano and she produces.
Paris Strother had the pleasure to collaborate with important acts like Bilal,Robert Glasper,Jill Scott,Foreign Exchange,Alex Isley and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Inspired by Stevie Wonder, blues singer and guitarist Bonnie Raitt and canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, Paris is providing superlative music with her grop known as KING.
In February KING released their debut album titled We Are King which earned a lot of praises from the most important media such as Spin,The Guardian and The New York Times to name a few.
Extra Medium is the brainchild of two clever artists: Ian Wallace aka Sam Champ and Orlando Marshall aka Buscrates 16-bit Ensemble.
In 2013 Extra Medium dropped the self-titled EP via Philly label Record Breakin’ Music …and wow…the project was a little but intense journey through soulful hip-hop vibes counting on da support of talented performers like Miles Bonny,Zaki Ibrahim and Nicholas Ryan Gant.
As solo artists Sam Champ and Buscrates do their own things with originality and mastery.
Buscrates put his wise hands on several collaborative opus like Re-Definition ( a musical project with U.K producer Mecca:83 and rapper Distantstarr) with which he dropped the sonic masterpiece Bahia Affair , released in 2014 via Manchester based label Expansion Collective.
Extra Medium produced the cosmic piece Lie To Me and all we can say is Extra Medium is the future!!
Los Angeles excellent pianist and producer Daniel Crawford is responsible for the exquisite production of the final track of TigallErro titled Something.
Daniel brilliance shines bright on da track but for us it’s not a surprise..infact he has accustomed us to his sublime works, starting with his artful tributes to the greats like J.Dilla and Fela Kuti and finishing with his sophomore album The Awakening
Great musician, producer and remixer (make sure you to taste his remix of Anderson.Paak Room In Here alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff) Daniel Crawford music combines elements of jazz with soul,hip-hop,r&b and he had the pleasure to collabo with Amp Fiddler,Vikter Duplaix,Ta-Ku,DJ Jazzy Jeff,Mike Posner,Prima J.
The music of Nicolay epitomizes class and refinement and his impressive versatility spans a wide range of genre: hip-hop,jazz and soul.
It wasn’t difficult for the eclectic producer/musician to work on the project, infact there is a good chemestry between Nic and Phonte Coleman that led them to start a fruitful collabo in 2002 producing great music under the stage name The Foreign Exchange, offering to the world real masterpieces like Connected,Leave It All Behind ( earning a grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance alongside Robert Glasper,Eric Roberson,Tonex and India.Arie.),Authenticity and more recently Tales from the Land of Milk and Honey.
Skilled musician, Nicolay plays keyboard/synthesizer, guitar, bass and drums and as in-demand producer he cooked brilliant productions for Little Brother, Median, Kay of The Foundation, Darien Brockington, Oh No, Yahzarah, Sy Smith, Strange Fruit Project, Stokley Williams of Mint Condition, Zion I, Roy Ayers and Jaguar Wright.
Nicolay co-produced Never The Same Smile and provides additional production on da track titled Grow This Love.
Texas musician/producer Caleb Sean co-produced Thru The Night with S1.
During his career Mr.Sean had the opportunity to put his craft at the service of stellar artists like Beyoncé,Talib Kweli,Kanye West,Lecrae and many others.
Caleb Sean is involved in a musical project named The Funky Knuckles, a jazz experimental band based in Dallas composed by bassist Wes Stephenson, drummer Cedric Moore, guitarist Phill Aelony, trumpeter Evan Weiss, saxophoist Ben Bohorquez and percussionist Frank Moka.
Deeply influenced by soul music gods such as Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Donny Hathaway , the North Carolina singer/songwriter/producer Sheldon Williams is the genius behind the song titled 3:45.
The beat was titled “3:45” because of it’s creation during the early hours of the morning. Phonte and Eric put their magic touch to it with the their impeccable
writing and singing, Chris “Tiger” Ellis played the bass guitar and the rest is history.
Sheldon Williams has amassed a brilliant record in his years of career, working alongside artists like Talib Kweli,Rapper Big Pooh, Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange,Phonte, Darien Brockington (producing one of our favorite song of the Washington native neo-soul crooner, If Only) and displaying also great skills as remixer , providing an amazing treatment remix of Phonte’s Ball and Chain included on the project +FE Music: The Reworks released three years ago.
Sheldon Williams music speaks to the soul, gives emotions but….wait,wait,wait…..we highly recommend to taste also his vocal prowess listening to his debut EP titled Made From Scratch released in 2014…..we guarantee an uplifting experience!!
